HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH KINKY HAIR

Sometimes Kinky hair is tricky to manage, therefore the question that comes to mind is, how often do I need to wash my kinky hair?

Kinky hair benefits a whole lot from the natural oil produced by the scalp (sebum), and this should caution you on how often you wash your hair. Over cleansing will render the scalp dry from natural oils and shampooing sparingly will leave the hair limp and greasy, funny right? We need to strike a balance to achieve a good result.

While it may seem easy to just wash your hair daily while taking a shower, it is advisable not to do that as it is wrong, follow the required guidelines for your hair type to prevent drying the hair up and ridding it of the essential nutrients it needs to thrive.

How often you wash your hair is a personal decision and the choice of method can be set according to your hair type and lifestyle, it will be good to note that incorrectly washing of your hair can actually cause scalp irritation and dandruff. However, some recommendations put the washing of kinky hair at once every 2-3 weeks, washing the hair less often if you have curly kinks is recommended, while some prefer once every week but ultimately, we all need to wash our hair but you should wash and condition depending on how dry or greasy your hair feels.

There are different textures for the kinky hair type: the fine kinky hair, the medium thick kinky hair and the thick or coarse kinky hair. We will be giving you tips on how you can get the best out of your various kinky hair type without causing harm or damage to the hair and scalp.

Fine Kinky Hair

The natural oil produced by the scalp is highly essential for the fine kinky hair. You will have to shampoo and condition daily or every other day to prevent your kinks from getting heavy or limp. Wash with a sulfate free shampoo to cut down on the grease and use a good conditioner that should replenish the hair of its lost moisture.

Medium Thick Kinky Hair

For this type of hair, you will be required to wash it every two to three days or once a week at least. Leaving a little amount of the hair sebum will help the hair texture look nice and healthy. If you work out frequently, then you can decide on washing with conditioners in between shampoos. A nourishing conditioner with a mix of jojoba oil, coconut oil and macadamia nut will give a good feel and texture after wash, or you can just rinse your hair with water and massage your scalp in between regular washing to revive your kinks.

Thick or Coarse Kinky Hair

This type of hair texture happens to be the one that gets dried up easily. You can actually go for days without washing this hair type. Since the natural oils produced by the scalp is essential for the good health of the hair and scalp, you wouldn’t want to lose the oil by making sure to retain it as much as you can. You should wash your hair not more than once a week or every other week and if you feel there is a need to refresh your kinks, then you can alternate with a dry shampoo or a co-wash with water and a nourishing conditioner.

Your hair type is not the only determiner of how often you should wash your hair, there are other external factors that can decide this. The porosity of your hair, the type of water you use can contribute to a change in your hair wash schedule. Washing daily or weekly is not compulsory for everyone but you should always wash when the hair is dirty and when you notice you have a product buildup.
